Matt Nathanson - Matt’s career is the fruition of a long history of promoting relentlessly and near-constant touring, building a strong, even fanatical, fanbase built from years of touring and above-the-call-of-duty efforts to personally connect with fans. His lyrics are symbolic and poetic - they go far beyond the standard Pop ABAB rhyme schemes and “You’re so amazing I love you so much,” themes that dominate the airwaves on mainstream radio. His initial effort was the independently produced “Please,” released in 1993, while Matt was still in college. Over the next ten years, his independent releases included, “Ernst,” “Not Colored Too Perfect,” “Still Waiting for Spring,” and “When Everything Meant Everything.” He then released, “Beneath These Fireworks,” on Universal and “Some Mad Hope,” on Vanguard. He also released a concert recording entitled, “Live at the Point.” The combination of his winning material and hilarious, personal banter in live shows have made Matt one of the favorites among the singer/songwriter fan community.

Ernie Halter - Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Ernie Halter sprinkles a bit of Soul into the acoustic mix. He self-released the home-recorded “Lo Fidelity,” and later studio recordings “Congress Hotel,” and “Starting Over.”

Not so for Aussie Musician Renee Cassar. In point of fact, as a youngster, she devoted her time and talents to another pursuit - tennis. Renee was a competitive tennis player from a young age and was focused supremely on her tennis competition, making it such that other interests and passions fell by the wayside.

However, at 17 years old, she experienced a life-changing event. I’m certain that all involved would celebrate the change as being a positive one.

Theater was a major focus of study for Renee in school, and so of course she wanted to be on stage as part of the play that her school was putting on that year. There was a slight obstacle, though. The school had chosen to produce the musical Fame - and singing was something entirely new to Renee. Nevertheless, seeing as how the audition piece was “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” and so she decided to give it a shot. When the lead role of Carmen went to her, it must have been completely unexpected!

Although she did take some singing lessons between the audition and opening night by way of preparing for her big debut, she was a true musical novice when she stepped out on the stage that first time. To make matters worse, she had lost her voice due to all that intensive preparation! Still, with voice remedies tucked backstage in case of emergency, she toughed it out and sang it strong. It was the start of a new life.

The History of the Music Box

The music box originated in the 19th century. It was, as it is still now, an automatic musical instrument. This on/off button has caused me a problem a few times lately, when the power button is pressed, nothing happens, It was bound to be s*ds law that my mobile would be bound to blast out its loud ringtone any second! Finish. One craftsman told me that the way to view whether a piece of furniture is high quality is to look at the finish. He told me that a piece of furniture that has any visible drops, pock marks, minor scratches, runs, or lacks consistency is one of the first signals to him that a piece of furniture was made by an assembly line and not by a craftsman. He went on to say that any piece that a person actually has made, from beginning to end, will have a terrific looking finish. He said that the finish is the first thing a person notices about a piece and an individual putting their name on it will not sacrifice anything when it comes to the finish – it is just not worth it to your reputation.

Wood. Another craftsman told me that the selection of the type of wood is very important to the quality of the music cabinet, not just for the time frame immediately following when it is completed, but for the piece to hold up for generations. He told me that many types of wood will expand and shrink with seasonal temperature changes, some types of wood will change quite a bit during the course of a hot day and cool night. That expansion followed by rapid shrinking is what will cause pieces of furniture to become loose in the hinges and begin to wobble. The person or company building the wood simply did not use the right wood to allow the piece to hold up over time.

Fit. A Third craftsman informed me that before the finish is applied he will take his pieces and test to see how sturdy the piece is by shaking it, pulling it, moving it by pushing on it from different angles and giving it a regular workout like it would have during the moving process as if a monkey was handling it (remember the old American Tourister ad with the monkey?). His rationale is that if the piece can survive that movement then it will be able to get to a destination safely and then will last a lifetime, if not longer. He also told me that the other item he is looking for is simply to be sure everything is smooth to the touch. He wants to be sure that joints fit tightly, dowels are snug and smooth to an open hand and that no corner should be left to have the feel of the cutting blade.

Function. The final craftsman I spoke with told me that a high quality piece of furniture will serve the purpose intended during the design process. Making each piece by hand allows the craftsman to develop with ways to make a piece better. They learn what works and what does not with every piece completed and their methods are refined with every unit made.

Quality is a wonderful thing. Selecting sheet music cabinets of exceptional quality will allow the piece to become an heirloom for your family, passing from generation to generation.
