Hip Hop : A Cultural Movement

May 6th, 2008 · No Comments

Hip Hop is a cultural movement that is believed to have started in the end of the 60’s as as a reaction to social inequities and violence towards the racial minorities.

It is a sort of street culture, because it feeds on the harsh reality of life on the streets, it is characterized by very strong rhythms, powerful vindicating lyrics and forms of art like the graffiti.

Hip Hop as a cultural movement basis on 4 different artistic manifestations: rap singing, dj’s instrumentals, breakdance and graffiti.

The term hip hop could be used as a synonym of rap, but it is used to describe both the rapping and the djing together.

In the end of the 1960’s, the hip hop movement started to come together in the black and Latin sunurbs of New York . These were real guettos, where violence, drugs, racism and poverty were everyday issues.

The street was the playground and there were gangs everywhere.
As a music style hip hop began when dj’s started isolating the beats from dico or funk tracks.

Even today we can see how a huge influence these 2 genres had on hip hop artists.

The MC or rapper would perform to the sound of the ebat, improvising most of the times. That is why MC stands for master of Ceremonies.

There several variations to hip hop which include: abstract hip-hop, dirty south, east coast, west coast, underground, hardcore, rap metal, ghetto tech, alternative hip-hop, chopped and screwed and many more.

Hip Hop’s typical instruments are: the turntable, the rapper or MC, a drum machine, synthesizer and human beatboxing.

Below is a small list of the most important hip hop albums of the last 30 years:
